Catastrophe by the Sea is a story of adventure exploration, empathy, community, and ultimately reunion. This new children's book, by renowned NSTA Notable author Brenda Peterson and Caldecott Medal illustrator, Ed Young, gives readers a glimpse of a busy and fascinating ecosystem in a readable style, in which kids will hardly notice that they're learning along the way.

In partnership with the Seattle Aquarium.

 BOOKLIST review:

"Peterson's lyrical text perfectly complements Young's stunning mixed-media-and-collage artwork. In one spread, the cat's shadow looms over a flailing, gigantic red octopus; in another, Catastrophe's paws reach out to the delicate, pastel tentacles of an anemone; and a band of purple barnacles rhythmically click and clack their shells despite being permanently attached to a rock. . . Appended with further discussion of tide pools and the importance of empathizing with these creatures."

“Catastrophe by the Seais a real delight. Peterson’s playful text and Ed Young’s stunning art tell the story of a lost cat befriending barnacles and other tidepool creatures. This charming new book inspires children to celebrate and care about these often-overlooked animals whose brave and vivid lives are so vital to our oceans.”

—Marc Bekoff, author of Canine Confidential: Why Dogs Do What They Do

Catastrophe by the Sea is a gorgeously illustrated and enchanting new children’s book by Ed Young and Brenda Peterson. Young’s over 90 books include three Caldecott Medals including the instant classic, Lon Po Po; his Cat from Hunger Mountain was selected by The New York Times and Amazon as a Best Book of 2016. “Young is at the height of his powers in this fable that offers a feast for the eyes, mind, and soul. A visual masterpiece."--Kirkus Reviews, starred review.

Peterson is a National Geographic author of 21 books, including her bestselling Leopard and Silkie: One Boy’s Quest to Save Seal Pups, which was a Scholastic Book Fairs selection. Her 2018 kid’s books are LOBOS: A Wolf Family Returns to the Wild and WILD ORCA, the Oldest, Wisest Whale in the World, a Junior Library League book, chosen by National Science Teachers Association as an “Outstanding Science Book for K-12.” An engaging, possibly inspiring addition to any nature collection."--School Library Journal

We are delighted to announce a new picture book, due out September 24, 2019 from West Margin Press (formerly Graphic Arts Books) in Berkeley, California. In partnership with the Seattle Aquarium, Ed Young and I created this kid's book together with designer Alison Kan Grevstad and my long-time editor, Marlene Blesing—a true dream team. We are very excited to work with West Margin Press. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at this book's beginnings.
